The Whale Trail is an unforgettable experience, taking you through one of the Western Cape’s most unique and diverse nature reserves. The route stretches over 55km, from Potberg to Koppie Alleen, with five overnight stops (hikers spend the first night at Potberg before starting the trail). The unspoilt natural beauty on this trail is unsurpassable, leading through lush fynbos and offering stunning views of the coast.
De Hoop is known as one of the best land-based whale-watching spots in the world. Between June and November, the coastline is transformed as southern right whales migrate here to breed and look after their young.
Unfortunately, children below the age of eight are not allowed on the trail. The route is fairly strenuous, varying in intensity.

- No Litter

Distances and Durations
The Whale Trail is 5 days and 5 nights.
The night before the hike is spend at Potberg hut, all hikers meet there latest 14:00
The following distances and durations are as follows:
- Day 1 = 15.5km (± 8 hours)
- Day 2 = 15.2km (± 8 hours)
- Day 3 = 8.5km (± 3 hours)
- Day 4 = 10.5km (± 6 hours)
- Day 5 = 7km (± 6 hours)
- Total Distance = 55km
OPtional Extras
- Shuttle Service to & from Cape Town Airport to Koppie Alleen
Transport
- If you are flying in, any flight arriving no later than 8am on the day of the trail
- If you are flying out, no flight earlier than 7pm on the last day of the trail from Cape Town International airport
